WHAT IS THE BLASPHEMY AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT?
“Choose the path of obedience and love, not the way of blasphemy and spiritual blindness.”
What Is the Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit?
Jesus summarized the Ten Commandments into two great principles:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.”— Matthew 22:37-38
This command reflects the essence of the first four commandments, which deal with our relationship with God—His authority, His name, His worship, and His holiness.
Breaking These First Four Commandments Is Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit
Violating these commandments is not merely disobedience—it is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit of God, because it:
-
Rejects the supremacy and sovereignty of God
-
Disrespects His holy name and His glory
-
Denies His Spirit’s divine work in drawing us to truth and repentance
This is the unforgivable sin—a sin that will not be pardoned, neither in this world nor in the world to come.
“And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.”— Matthew 12:31-32
“Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”— Luke 12:10
A Tragic Reality
Shockingly, the vast majority of Christians today—perhaps 95%—are breaking these first four commandments, often without realizing it. Many do so knowingly, yet they continue in disobedience, choosing to follow religious traditions, denominational teachings, or human authorities over the Word of God. They appear proud of their loyalty to these systems, even though such allegiance leads them into disobedience against God's clear commandments.
This is spiritual blindness—and it has eternal consequences.
The Second Great Commandment: Love Others
Jesus continued:
“And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”— Matthew 22:39-40
This second commandment summarizes the remaining six commandments, which govern our relationships with others—honor, honesty, fidelity, and respect.
These sins—violations against fellow human beings—can be forgiven, thanks to the sacrificial death of Christ for the sins of mankind. Through repentance and faith in Christ, there is grace and restoration.
How to Recognize the Spirit of the Antichrist
The Bible clearly warns us of a deceptive spirit that rejects Christ and opposes the truth. This spirit is already active in the world, and its influence leads many to dishonor God unknowingly.
“Every spirit that does not confess Jesus (that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh) is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and is now already in the world.”— 1 John 4:3
“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”— John 8:44
Those influenced by this spirit distort or deny the commands of God. They may appear religious, but their actions contradict the Holy Spirit’s leading. They reject God's authority—and in doing so, risk committing the very blasphemy Jesus warned about.
Final Thought
It is time for every believer to examine their faith and practices honestly. Are we truly obeying the first and greatest commandment? Are we honoring the Spirit of God? Or are we, knowingly or unknowingly, aligning ourselves with the spirit of the antichrist?
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom."— Proverbs 9:10
Let us return to the pure, unadulterated commandments of God—not man-made doctrines—and worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.
